In a major rescue operation, India has successfully brought back 549 of its citizens who were trapped in cyber crime centres along the Myanmar-Thailand border. These individuals, hailing from states like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, were lured with fake IT job offers and later forced into online fraud activities.

How It All Began: The Job Scam That Led to Trafficking

Criminal syndicates, mostly operated by Chinese gangs, have been targeting unsuspecting job seekers with lucrative job offers in Southeast Asia. Many Indians, desperate for better opportunities, were duped into traveling to Thailand or Myanmar, only to find themselves trapped in cyber scam centres in lawless regions of Myanmar. These areas, beyond the control of the military junta, have become hotbeds for illegal online fraud operations.

Once inside these centres, victims were forced to commit cybercrimes, scamming people worldwide through fraudulent schemes. Attempts to leave were met with severe threats and violence.

The Rescue Mission: Coordinated Efforts by India, Myanmar & Thailand

A recent crackdown along the Myanmar-Thailand border led to the release of hundreds of such victims, including citizens from several South and Southeast Asian countries. The Indian government, in collaboration with authorities in Myanmar and Thailand, ensured the safe repatriation of its citizens.

The rescued individuals were moved from Myanmar’s Myawaddy region to Thailand’s Mae Sot and temporarily housed in detention centres. They were then flown back to India on two Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 heavy-lift aircraft on Monday and Tuesday.

Government’s Warning: A Pattern of Cyber Crime Recruitment

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been issuing repeated warnings about such fraudulent job offers in Southeast Asia. The government has urged Indian job seekers to verify foreign employers through official Indian missions and thoroughly check the background of recruiting agencies before accepting overseas job offers.

The Indian embassy in Laos had earlier rescued 67 Indian men in January from a similar cyber scam operation, bringing the total number of Indians rescued from such scams in Southeast Asia to 924 in recent years.

The Growing Cyber Scam Industry & The “Pig Butchering” Fraud

These scams, known as the “Pig Butchering” scam, involve fraudsters convincing victims to invest money in fake online platforms, only to steal their funds. The term comes from the practice of fattening up a pig before slaughtering it. Criminal networks operating in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand have been using trafficked individuals to carry out these scams on a global scale.

What’s Next? A Call for Awareness & Caution

While the Indian government has successfully rescued hundreds, the rising cases of cyber crime-related trafficking highlight the urgent need for stricter regulations and awareness campaigns. Job seekers must exercise caution and verify employment opportunities before making decisions that could lead to such dangerous traps.

Good news! Google Messages is working on a new feature that will let you start a WhatsApp video call without leaving the app. This means you won’t have to switch between apps to have a face-to-face conversation with your contacts.

How will this work

A recent AK teardown of the Google Messages app revealed that a WhatsApp video call option is coming soon. Although the feature isn’t officially live yet, it has been manually activated in Google Messages v20250131, giving us a glimpse of how it might work.

Currently, when you start a video call from a chat in Google Messages, it automatically opens Google Meet, as long as both users have the app installed. However, with this new update, tapping the video call icon in the top-right corner will offer an additional option: WhatsApp video calls—but only if both users have WhatsApp installed.

If the person you’re chatting with doesn’t use WhatsApp, the option simply won’t appear. Ideally, Google Messages should allow users to choose between WhatsApp and Google Meet for video calls, and we’ll likely get more details as the feature continues to develop.

Lower Lending Rates Make Borrowing More Affordable – Here’s How

In a significant move, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a 25-basis-point cut in the repo rate, bringing it down to 6.25%. This marks the first revision in nearly five years, with the last reduction occurring in May 2020.

During the announcement, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra highlighted that while the Indian economy remains resilient, it is not entirely insulated from global challenges. He emphasized the importance of stakeholder consultations and reaffirmed the commitment to strengthening the prudential framework. Additionally, he noted that average inflation has remained lower since the implementation of the monetary policy framework.

Impact on Home Loans

The repo rate directly influences lending rates, particularly home loans. When the RBI reduces the repo rate, banks typically follow suit by lowering their lending rates, making loans more affordable. This impacts both fixed and floating interest rate loans, with floating-rate borrowers experiencing benefits either immediately or at their next reset period.

What Borrowers Should Know

Since April 2019, banks have been required to link their home loan interest rates to the External Benchmark Lending Rate (EBLR). This linkage ensures that floating-rate loans respond more directly to changes in monetary policy. As a result, both new and existing borrowers stand to benefit, especially when interest rates decrease.

Action Points for Borrowers

  • Monitor RBI’s bi-monthly policy meetings for rate updates.
  • Contact banks when repo rates drop to check for adjustments.
  • Consider rate negotiation or refinancing, particularly for floating-rate loans.

Important Considerations

  • EMI reductions follow repo rate cuts, but the timing varies.
  • Banks differ in how quickly they implement rate changes.
  • Even small rate cuts can lead to significant long-term savings on home loans.

This revised version enhances clarity, professionalism, and readability while maintaining a structured flow. Let me know if you need any additional refinements!

In a major security scare, two schools in Noida and Delhi received bomb threats via email on Friday, prompting immediate evacuation and police action. Bomb and dog squads were deployed to the sites as authorities conducted a thorough search.

Immediate Response and Evacuation

As per standard protocol, the campuses were immediately shut down to ensure student safety. The schools promptly informed parents about the threats, advising them to keep their children at home. Students who had already boarded school buses were sent back.

A message from one of the affected schools read:
“We are closing the campus for the day to conduct a complete sweep to ensure the safety of all.”

Link to Previous Fake Threats

This latest incident comes just a day after a 15-year-old Class 9 student was taken into custody for allegedly sending fake bomb threat emails to four schools in Noida. According to police, the student used Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology to conceal his IP address and location. His motive was reportedly to avoid attending school.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities are taking these threats seriously, considering the recent trend of fake alerts disrupting schools. Noida DCP Ram Badan Singh confirmed that four schools—Step By Step, The Heritage School, Gyanshree, and Mayoor School—received bomb threats around 12:30 AM on Wednesday. The school administration reported the threats to the police, who are now investigating the source of the emails.

Security measures have been heightened, and officials are urging vigilance to prevent further incidents.

In a key judicial move, the Supreme Court of India has transferred all petitions challenging the 2025 Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) results to a division bench of the Delhi High Court. The decision aims to consolidate proceedings and ensure uniform adjudication.

A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan, directed that the Delhi High Court will take up the petitions on March 3. Additionally, the Supreme Court instructed registrars of multiple high courts, including Bombay, Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Calcutta, to transfer all pending judicial records related to the matter within seven days.

🔹 Background of the Case

  • The CLAT 2025 exam was conducted on December 1, 2024, determining admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate law programs in prestigious National Law Universities (NLUs) across India.
  • Multiple petitions were filed in various high courts, alleging irregularities in the examination process and result discrepancies.
  • On January 15, the Supreme Court hinted at transferring all cases to a single high court, initially considering Punjab and Haryana High Court before deciding on Delhi High Court as the final venue.

🔹 Next Steps

  • The Delhi High Court will now hear and decide on the matter, ensuring a unified legal approach.
  • Petitioners and stakeholders are expected to present their arguments regarding the alleged anomalies in CLAT 2025 results.
  • The outcome of these proceedings could impact law aspirants across the country.
