As the financial year nears its end, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its crackdown on property tax defaulters. Despite multiple notices, several defaulters have failed to clear their dues, prompting the civic body to attach properties of 33 major offenders. So far, ₹5.12 crore has been recovered from 10 of them.
The NMMC had set a property tax collection target of ₹900 crore for the 2024-25 financial year and has collected ₹617 crore so far. Notices have been issued to nearly 8,000 defaulters, each owing more than ₹1 lakh in unpaid dues. Those who ignored the notices beyond the stipulated deadline have now faced strict action.
Municipal commissioner Kailas Shinde emphasized the importance of property tax in maintaining quality civic services and urged citizens to fulfill their financial obligations. He highlighted the case of a prominent Nerul housing society that owes ₹5.32 crore in dues. The society consists of 68 commercial properties, each with dues exceeding ₹1 lakh. A confiscation officer has been assigned to seize these properties, and if the payments are not made within five days, they will be auctioned.
The NMMC is also prepared to take additional measures, including disconnecting the water supply to societies and establishments with significant arrears. The commissioner has urged defaulters to clear their dues immediately to avoid stringent actions.
